Fleas
Fleas are a fact of life for anyone who has pets. They are not a disease that needs a cure, but a problem that needs to be controlled. Fleas are an increasing problem for pets and their owners, which can be attributed to the warm summers, mild winters and heating in our homes. We are seeing pets with fleas in mid-winter as a result of these conditions. Fleas can occur on any pet, even those that do not venture out of doors, as they can be brought into the home by yourselves, i.e. on clothing, shoes etc. or visiting pets. It is inevitable that in a pet's lifetime, fleas will visit your home and your pet. While the female flea is feeding on your pet, she lays about 50 eggs per day. These eggs fall out of the pet's coat, wherever your pet may be lying at the time. The larvae, which then hatch, are tiny little worms that crawl into a warm dark place where they feed and form a pupae and wait for ideal conditions before they mature into adult fleas. In the right conditions this only takes 3 weeks, then we have a new generation of fleas feeding on your pet and laying eggs. It is this tremendous reproductive potential which has made fleas such a problem. Fortunately, there is a range of products available which do control the flea life cycle, if you would like to discuss a suitable control programme please pop in and we will be happy to tailor a plan for your needs. One of the commonest problems with flea control is forgetting when it is due. To help you remember we have set up the "Petvet Reminder System", this will send you an e-mail and let you know that it is time to de-flea your dog. Just press the button on the left. |
