Does your pet suffer from fleas?
Friday, Sep 30, 2011
The adult fleas on our pets (the only stage we see) represent the tip of the iceberg or about 2-5% of the total flea population.
For every flea we see there is probably another 20 on the animal and for every flea on the animal there are 50 in the animal's environment, so one flea observed can mean another 1000 in the environment. We only see the tip of iceberg.
The flea life cycle is completed in as little as 12 -14 days or can take as long as a year.
Adult fleas can survive for up to 120 days on your pet.
In ideal conditions 10 fleas can become 1/4 million in one month if left untreated.
Flea treatments should be fast. Female fleas can reproduce within 36 hrs of arrival on host, so 100% kill should occur before this time.
With Advocate fleas do not need to bite to die and are killed before they have a chance to lay eggs. Advocate not only controls the Adult fleas on your pet but will also kill flea larvae in the environment. Advocate once applied to your pet rapidly spreads around the animal within 12-24 hrs, Advocate kills re-infesting fleas within 2 hours and will stop fleas biting within minutes.

Nurse Consults

At Ponsonby and Herne Bay Veterinary Centre, your pet's care doesn't finish when you walk out of the consultation. Trained nurses are available to help you with an array of pet care needs that don't require a veterinary consult.
Our nurses can assist you with some of the following needs:
Weight Loss Programs - Specifically tailored to the individual nutritional needs of your beloved pet.
Fluid Therapy for elderly cats - If your vet has recommended that subcutaneous fluids would be beneficial to their continued well being, demonstrations can be arranged to educate you on how this can be done at home for your cat.
Worming and Flea treatments - If you're struggling with giving worm tablets or not sure what flea treatment best suits your pet, our nurses would be glad to help!
Additional information regarding a diagnosis given by the Vet - Arrange a nurse consult or a time to speak on the phone, and we can help you better understand what care your animal will need.

Dental Checks and teeth cleaning demonstrations
