Merry Christmas and hours

It has been another good year for Ponsonby Veterinary Centre and our team has continued to grow. The most recent addition is Dr Liv Wallin who joined our veterinary team this month. Liv graduated from Florida and has since done an internship in New York before coming to New Zealand. She is a fantastic veterinarian and we are very lucky to have someone of her abilities here at PVC. She asked me to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hopes to meet you all in 2007.

It is of course not just Liv but all of us here who would like to send out our best wishes for the festive season and a big thank you for all your support in 2006. Summer Hazards

These are a few quick tips to remember this summer:

• For all animals: be sure your pets have free access to shade/shelter, water at all times, and food daily.
• Don't leave your pets in the car even for 10 minutes they are very prone to heat stress.
• Make sure antifreeze is disposed of correctly. It tastes sweet and is highly toxic. Keep this away from all animals. It destroys the kidneys. A very small amount can be fatal to a cat.
• Slug bait or metaldehyde is also toxic. It causes seizure in pets. Make sure your pets do not have access to it.
• Rat poisons are often anticoagulants and taste very nice to pets. They are usually in a grain bait. If your pet eats a rat that has died from rat poison, the same poison can poison it. Low grade, chronic exposure to a rat poison is worse prognostically than one big dose.
• Keep up with good flea control (we recommend Advantage, Frontline or Revolution) - fleas breed very rapidly at this time of year.

Did you know that the urbanites use more pesticides and herbicides than agriculturists do? If you use these products, don't wing it. Be sure to read the labels. The old adage " a little is good so a lot must be great" is not true - a lot is toxic to all of us. If animals are exposed to these products, they can become sick. Weeds are messily visible. Herbicides and pesticides are invisible poisons.
