Our nurses also run weight control programs. These are a free service aimed at keeping your pet trim and healthy, and are an important part of our preventative health services. Obesity is a very common condition in dogs and cats. This condition causes a number of serious side effects; cardiac & respiratory function, Joints & muscles, Skin & Hair, Diabetes to name a few of the more common problems encountered. The process of assessing if a dog is under or overweight is called Condition Scoring. This assesses your pets fat in relation to their natural shape. Humans are considered clinically obese when they are 15% overweight, this appears to work reasonably well for dogs but not so well with cats. Recent research has come up with a new system of measuring your cat's percentage of body fat, this is called the Feline Body Mass Index. This can be calculated using a tape measure and taking two physical measurements, the length from the knee to the hock, and the circumference of the rib cage. If you are interested in your cats reading we are now more than happy to take this for you. What's more this is a free service. Our nurses will give you all the advice & support you and your pet need to slim your pet back to their ideal weight. We can provide a weight reducing diet, support & information to keep you on track during your pet's weight loss and afterwards to keep it off. Give our nurses a call or pop in for more information. |
