8. Health and Well-being Checks for the Older Pet

Old age has a way of sneaking up on pets just as it does with people. Aging is a gradual process and you may not notice that your pet doesn't have quite the zip & vigor of his youth. He also tires more easily and naps a lot and sometimes he's a little bit stubborn. Could it be that your best friend is getting old?

The important thing to remember is that those slowing down signs do not necessarily mean the beginning of a decline, but a change in your pet's physical make-up.

Old age does have its discomforts; a slow decline in the functions of the body organs, & a decreased resistance to disease and injury (hence the importance of regular vaccinations). An elderly pet is as accident prone as a puppy or kitten, he doesn't see or hear as well as he used to.

The problems of age can be treated, sometimes cured, and always comforted by a combination of thoughtful and responsible home care and regular medical attention.

Laboratory analysis, blood pressure measurement and a thorough medical health check can detect many of the changes brought about by age. Identifying these changes early will often prevent or control the disabilities of old age.
