AnaesthesiaAnaesthesia is often a major concern with owners. However with familiarity of modern anaesthetic drugs and techniques, comprehensive monitoring, fluid therapy and good pain control rabbits and small pets should not be at special risk of anaesthetic complications. Analgesia is the provision of pain relief. These are given before and after surgery to minimise the degree of pain experienced by surgery. These will also help reduce the stress associated with surgery for the animal and decrease the risk of post-operative complications (e.g. wound breakdown). Always ensure your Rabbit, Mouse or Rat has access to food and water up to 1 hour before anaesthaesia as this reduces the risk of post-operative inappetance and hypoglycaemia. It is unnecessary to starve them as with dogs, cats and people since they don't vomit. Please note that Guinea Pigs should have food withdrawn 2-4 hours before anaesthesia. |
